14 Days Until Christmas

We have been very busy with Christmas related activities in R5. We have been using the Literacy Shed videos as inspiration for our writing. Here are two adverts from John Lewis.

Koito's Arcade Game

Koito was inspired by Caine to create this arcade shooting game. It is really hard to get the paper ball in the hoop.

One of the features of her game is that you shoot the ball from a distance that is age dependent.

Whale Evolution

We have been learning about the evolution of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises). Did you know that cetaceans are the marine mammal descendants of land mammals? Jacob created this awesome illustration of what he learnt.

Today, as part of our study of The Lorax by Dr Suess, we watched the movie that was made in 1972. We had to fill in a plan of the event while we were watching. Once we had finished watching the movie, we had to use our plans to write a news report about what happened.

Rice Birthday Cake!

Have you ever heard of or seen a cake made of rice? Well, Room 5 has. Koito showed us once again just how talented she is by bringing in a rice cake for Lina's birthday that she made with her mum. It was delicious, it tasted like sushi!

Collaborative Narratives

We have been writing narratives collaboratively. We were given a dull story about a lonely spider that we thought was a Level 1 example. We had to work in pairs to improve the story in order to show what a Level 2/3 exemplar would look like. Here are some of our results.

101 Days of School!

Unfortunately we were unable to celebrate 100 days of school so we had a 101 day party instead! We had a lot of fun. One of the activities we did was to see if we could read 101 books. Room 5 were so determined to reach 101 that they read 126 books! Every time a book was read, it had to be entered in a Google Doc: Here are the results.

How to look after Chromebooks

Today we used the Chromebook Guidelines we created to make movies using iMovie on the iPad. It was a hard process.


Here is a movie by Sebastian, Jessica and Rory. They were so determined to finish their movie that they worked through lunchtime!

The Chromebooks have landed!

Our letters to Jude must have been very convincing because this week we were able to use the Chromebooks for the first time! We took a special trip down to Ruma 12 to open the boxes and work on some collaborative Google Documents.

Why R5 should get Chromebooks

This week we have been writing letters to our Principal - Jude. We wrote to persuade Jude that Room 5 should have Chromebooks. We had to outline how we would use them for our learning and how we would look after them. We had to use strong persuasive language. Here is Mary's letter.

Finley has written a speech to persuade adults that some kid's TV programmes are educational and worth watching. He decided to present his speech using Google Slides. He has figured out how to insert videos into his slides to give examples for each main point of his speech.

Kauri Block Opens!

We had a very special day on Friday, the new block of classrooms was officially opened! We had an opening ceremony and then as part of the celebration, we had a special concert with performances. Here is a video of some of the highlights.


We also had a shared lunch after the concert. There was so much delicious food!
